Paul was raised in a coal mining town with an influential father who did favors for the community without resorting to crime. He pursued theatre and photography, leading him to start an amateur youth theatre company and eventually film directing commercials.

Years passed, but he avoided writing due to excuses. This ended when he realized his misery stemmed from not pursuing writing. He chose to get serious about writing, rearranging his life accordingly.
